Hand Wraps: Properly wrapped hands are the key to
avoiding hand injuries. The impact of punching a solid
object (someone's head) can be quite damaging to your
hands. When wrapping your hands, remember to separate
your fingers to allow free movement. Wrapping them too
tightly is the most common mistake. The padding around
the knuckles should also be tight and smooth; no
wrinkles or uneven surfaces.
Boxing Gloves: Correctly fitted gloves should be snug and comfortable. Keep laces tied and away. Prior to every match, the plastic ends must be cut off, the laces should be wrapped with hand wraps and the gloves lightly layered with petroleum jelly.
Mouthpiece: You should use a mouthpiece that custom molds to your mouth. When it comes to protecting your jaws and teeth, there is no room for being cheap.
Boxing Shoes: Boxing shoes are lighter, and provide better ankle support compared to normal athletic shoes. A good pair of boxing shoes should provide good balance, great ankle support and keep you light on your feet.
Headgear: Using headgear that is properly secured to your head and doesn't move upon impact is very important. It is debatable whether or not headgear actually prevents or diminishes head injuries.
